HOME OF HAVANESE AND COTON de TULEAR PUPPIES
Havanese and Coton Puppies are some of the sweetest dogs we have ever been blessed to know. They are affectionate, funny and smart. These little dogs love everyone and everything and respond to people's emotional needs. They make great companion dogs and love learning new tricks. They are hypoallergenic and grow hair, not fur, and they don't shed. This makes them perfect for people with allergies and asthma. As a small breed they typically grow to be 8 to 12 pounds and generally live 12 to 16 years.
The Havanese and Coton de Tulear were both from the same dog 400 years ago. The dogs of Reunion, France were a hypoallergenic , small dog that was greatly valued by royalty. Sometime in the 1600's, some of the dogs of Reunion were exported to Cuba. There they adapted to the climate and developed a silky coat and a bit longer legs and became known as "Havana Silk" dogs. They were highly prized by royalty there, as well, and a law was passed that they could not be exported. In 1963, a group of six Havanese were smuggled into New York City where they were an instant celebrity. They, as the Cotons, are bred to be companion dogs and have been used as service dogs and circus dogs for many years.
The Coton de Tulear, known as the "Royal Dog of Madagascar," made their first appearance in the Mascarene Islands. History speculates that the initial stock arrived from France, probably via a ship wreck. They were principally found in the port city of Reunion. As a valuable trade commodity, they were taken to nearby Madagascar. Eventually the dogs of Reunion became extinct. The dogs imported to Madagascar thrived as they were embraced by nobles of the Merina tribe. As the tribe operated on a caste system of nobles and freeman, the Coton was restricted to nobility for many years. This is one of the reasons why the dog is so rare today.
The Coton de Tulear and the Havanese are bred and raised to be strictly companion dogs. Because of their delightful personalities, small size, dark eyes, long lashes, and super charm, they are said to sometimes actually smile. Both breeds are not known to be vicious, but need to be socialized at an early age due to shyness in some puppies. They bond easily to the humans in their life and are often known as "little clowns" and "little puppets" due to their playful demeanor.
The Coton de Tulear is a fluffy little ball; sometimes with patches of color. They usually stand from around 10 to 12 inches and weigh from 10 to 13 lbs. The body is rectangular and the backline is usually slightly convex. The head is triangular and rather small. The coat is long, dry, oil and dander free and has no doggy odor, so it is a good choice for allergy sufferers. Coton puppies are often born with color, sometimes fading as the puppy reaches adulthood. Patches of yellow and black, notably on the ears and tail, are often found on new puppies. Many are born with black, chocolate and white. At about 7 months of age, most Coton youngsters “blow” their puppy coats and the new hair which grows in is, at times, white; however, about 50% of the puppies born with color retain that color. There is no set rule about what color the Coton should be and while the pure white puppies tend to sell for more money, many puppy parents prefer the puppies with color. Which brings us to why we have Coton and Havanese puppies for sale---WE LOVE THEM!!!
